Many people who know me describe me as more cerebral than emotional. From my perspective, that doesn’t feel entirely accurate, but I can understand why they would say it. With degrees in engineering and statistics, my background suggests I might be more cognitive than emotional. However, much of my childhood was impulsive and free-spirited, and I always loved classes that went beyond rigid, factual content.
How My Walk with Christ is Shaped by Thought and Faith
Much of my walk with Christ has been shaped through the study of God’s word and the books I've read. My growth in faith has primarily come from a cognitive perspective, where I deeply analyze and reflect on the teachings of Scripture. I am more of a thinker, and that’s okay—it's part of how I’m uniquely made. Everyone’s spiritual journey is different, and mine may look very different from others. This idea is supported by Paul in Ephesians 2:8-10.
Ephesians 2:8-10: Embracing Your Unique Purpose in Christ
Ephesians 2:8-9 outlines the foundation of our salvation:
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.”
These verses remind us that salvation is not something we earn. It’s a free gift from God, offered through faith. But verse 10 explains the result of this new life in Christ:
“For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
Paul teaches us that we are God’s masterpieces, each of us uniquely designed to accomplish specific tasks that only we can do. No one else can fulfill the purpose that God has specifically prepared for us.
Why Understanding the Foundation Matters
It’s interesting how often people mix up the foundation of salvation with the result of salvation. Many people mistakenly try to work for God’s acceptance, never experiencing the freedom that comes from simply being who God created them to be. Ephesians 2:8-10 is clear: there’s nothing you can do to earn God’s approval. When you accept His gift of salvation through faith, you are freed to live as the person God intended you to be.
Living Your Unique Life in Christ
You didn’t enter into a new life simply to secure a place in heaven. The gospel is not about “fire insurance.” I know this may challenge some of you, but as you embrace the gift of grace from God, you are free to live out the unique role He has designed just for you.
Imagine how many incredible things the world has missed because people haven’t embraced their distinct calling in life. They didn’t fully engage with God to become and do what He uniquely created them for. So, what exceptional works does God want to do through you?
It’s important to note that this doesn’t always mean others will notice. In fact, it might only be between you and God. But God will know, and you will know.
Embracing Your Unique Characteristics
You are God’s plan A—there is no plan B. There is no backup for you.
God has designed you to be a one-of-a-kind person with irreplaceable characteristics. These unique traits aren’t shared with anyone else, and God has intentionally woven them into you. He wants to walk with you in life—both now and in eternity—doing works that are specifically designed for you. You’ll be able to accomplish things no one else can do and be someone no one else can be!
As many thinkers like Dallas Willard and C.S. Lewis have suggested, these unique attributes will continue into eternity. You won’t just be sitting on a cloud playing a harp. Instead, you’ll be fulfilling the unique purpose God has for you.
The Eternal Value of Embracing Your Uniqueness
The eternal value of embracing your unique purpose in Christ is immense. Only by living out your true identity in Him can you experience the full impact of God’s design for you.
