
Avoiding Burnout: Leading from Your Calling, Not from Expectation

Burnout doesn’t announce itself. It creeps in quietly, often disguised as diligence or a desire to meet others' needs. For leaders, especially in Christian ministry, burnout can feel like a betrayal of your calling—leaving you questioning your purpose, avoiding difficult conversations, and feeling utterly lost. I know because I’ve been there.
My Burnout Story
I found myself in a season of relentless striving in the last year. On the surface, I was thriving—leading a growing ministry, mentoring others, and meeting expectations. But under the surface, I was exhausted.
I wasn’t leading from my calling; I was leading from the weight of others' expectations. I felt compelled to say "yes" to everything and everyone, fearing I’d let someone down. Over time, this people-pleasing mindset became a prison.
The cracks started to show. My decision-making became clouded. I avoided necessary but hard conversations. My energy plummeted, and I lost sight of why I began this journey in the first place. I wasn’t leading with clarity or conviction—I was simply surviving.
It wasn’t until I hit a wall that I realized something had to change. I had to lead from a place of calling, not from the unending expectations around me.
The Problem with Leading from Expectation
Leading from expectation is a recipe for burnout. It puts you in a constant state of reacting to others instead of proactively aligning with your mission. Here’s what I’ve observed:
Expectations are endless. You can’t meet everyone’s demands. Attempting to will leave you emotionally drained.
Expectations aren’t always clear. People may expect things of you they’ve never communicated, leaving you guessing and overextending.
Expectations are about them, not your calling. While feedback is valuable, leading solely based on others’ desires often pulls you away from God’s purpose for your life.
When you anchor your leadership in expectation, you’re running on borrowed energy. Eventually, that tank runs dry.
How to Lead from Your Calling
Making the shift from expectation to calling isn’t just freeing—it’s necessary for sustainable, impactful leadership. Here are the steps I took to reclaim my purpose and avoid burnout:
1. Reconnect with Your Calling
Ask yourself: Why did God call me to this work? What unique gifts and passions did He equip me with?
For me, this meant revisiting my mission: helping leaders discover their God-given wiring and embrace their authentic calling. When I realigned my daily work with this purpose, I found renewed energy.
Take time to reflect, journal, and pray. Seek clarity about your “why.”
2. Set Clear Boundaries
People-pleasing erodes boundaries, leaving you vulnerable to overcommitment. Once I realized this, I began practicing saying “no” to things that didn’t align with my mission.
Ask yourself:
Does this request align with my calling?
Will this decision move me closer to fulfilling God’s purpose in my life?
Boundaries aren’t selfish—they protect your ability to serve effectively.
3. Focus on Relationships That Pour Back
One of the most draining aspects of burnout is feeling like you’re constantly giving but never receiving. Identify mentors, peers, and friends who can pour into your life and leadership.
For me, it was leaning on my mentor, Greg, who asked hard questions that brought me back to courage and clarity. Surround yourself with people who remind you of your purpose and point you to Christ.
4. Address Challenges Head-On
Avoiding tough conversations and decisions only compounds stress. I learned that when I faced challenges early—with prayer and humility—I could resolve issues before they spiraled.
Ephesians 4:15 reminds us to speak the truth in love. Facing difficulties with grace is part of leading from your calling.
5. Invest in Personal Development

When you invest in understanding yourself, you can lead from a place of strength, not exhaustion.
6. Prioritize Rest and Renewal
Even Jesus withdrew from the crowds to rest and pray (Luke 5:16). If the Son of God needed moments of solitude, how much more do we?
Build rhythms of rest into your week:
A daily time of quiet prayer and reflection.
A weekly Sabbath.
Seasonal retreats to reconnect with your mission.
Rest isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity for sustainable leadership.
7. Lead with Authenticity
At the heart of leading from your calling is authenticity. God wired you uniquely for your role. Lean into your strengths, embrace your weaknesses, and lead as the person God created you to be.

When I shifted from leading by expectation to leading from calling, everything changed. My decision-making became clearer. I approached conversations with confidence. Most importantly, I felt a deep sense of peace, knowing I was aligned with God’s purpose for my life.
